Beijng volunteer begin their work

From today, the beijing volunteer begin their work. Tourists and local residents can get help at 500 volunteer service stations across the city during the Beijing Olympics. 200 of them will start operations this Tuesday, the Beijing Morning Post reported.

Another 200 will commence service on July 20, while the rest will be ready before August 1, officials announced at a press conference on Monday.

The stations spread over the 18 regions and suburban counties of the city, mainly around the Olympic venues, transport hubs, scenic spots and downtown areas, where 400,000 volunteers will provide information, interpretation services, and emergency aids eight hours a day.

From August 1 to 26, the stations beside the National Stadium, the Olympic village, the media centers, and the nightlife areas such as Guijie and Shichahai, will open 24 hours a day.

Over the past few months, volunteers have received training in areas such as knowledge on physical abilities, oral English, emergency aid and self protection.

The official statistics show the applicants to the Olympic volunteer program, which ended on Monday, has exceeded two million.
