Funny Chinese Expression: 不好意思

Published by Turner under Learn Chinese

Here today we would like to learn a funny Chinese Expression:不好意思

My girlfriend and I have been staying with my parents here in San Fransico since the 4th of July. My family has been very generous and hospitable to her during that time. Naturally, her response was, “我觉得不好意思(wǒ juéde bù hǎo yìsi).” Then she asked me how to say 不好意思(bù hǎo yìsi) in English.

I usually find 不好意思(bù hǎo yìsi) pretty easy to translate, as it can often correspond to “sorry” or “excuse me” in English. When you’re a little late to a meeting, you can say 不好意思 (sorry). When you eat the last cookie and then somone else wants one, you can say 不好意思 (sorry). When you bump someone on the subway, you can say 不好意思 (sorry).

But in this case, my girlfriend’s usage was meant to express something like, “your kindness is too much,” or “you’re being so nice that it makes me feel too indebted.” And she wanted me to come up with one easy word or phrase to translate. When I couldn’t, and I asked for help from my sister, and she couldn’t either, my girlfriend just laughed: “you Americans never feel 不好意思(bù hǎo yìsi)!”

_______

Actually 意思 (yìsi) has many different meandings as following I have listed. All of them have something to do with what you think. Have you noticed that the bottom parts of the two Chinese characters are (xīn, heart)? Attention, the second character is a light tone. Read aloud after me “意思 yìsi” ,不好意思 (bù hǎo yìsi) !

>>> 意思 yìsi
1.〖meaning;i dea〗∶意义;道理

  例如:不要误会我的意思 Please don’t misunderstand what I mean.
2.〖intention; wish; desire〗∶意图;用意。
例如:文章的中心意思 the key intention of this article
3.〖a token of affection, appreciation, etc.〗∶略表心意
例如:这点东西送给您,小意思,别客气 This is a small token for you. I hope you like it.
4.〖suggestion; hint; trace〗∶某种趋势或迹象。
例如:我发现她对你有的意思呢! I find she has something special feeling to you.
5. 〖interest; fun〗∶情趣;趣味。
例如:打乒乓球很有意思 It is very interesting to play table tennis.

6. 不好意思 (bù hǎo yìsi): excuse me; sorry; embarressed
例如:不好意思,我的中文说得不好。 I am sorry, my Chinese is very bad.

________

When you meet Chinese friends, you can say like this to express how your Chinese is going.

Wǒ zhōngwén shuō de bù hǎo,

 我                      好,

Hěn bù hǎo  yìsi.

          意思。

Dànshì,  xué zhōngwén  hěn yǒu  yìshí.

  是,                               意思

>> I am sorry my Chinese is not good.

>> But, it is interesting to learn Chinese!

In Thailand Bangkok internaitonal airport, thousands of foreigners became stranded after the anti-governmetn protesters laid siege to the airport. The foreigers in the airport are waiting for their flights to leave here, but no one knows when they can to back.

And there are also lots of Chinese citizens in the airport. According to the news, four of the country’s airlines will arrange five flights to Thailand to bring home the stranded Chinese tourists  there due to the closure of the Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok.

Now i really feel proud to be a Chinese citizen, though i am not stranded in Thailand. We can feel the power of our mother country and the benefit we can get from the country. We welcome our brothers come back.

Terror attack in Mumbai will affect the business development

Published by Turner under China news

This morning, when i came to the office, my college told me that i was lucky that we have came back from India. According to the reports, more than 80 people had been killed in the terror attack in Mumbai. In the afternoon, at least six foreigners have been killed and the death figure has gone up to 101.

First, it grieves to see that so many people are killed in the attack, as they are innocent. Second, i think this attack will deeply affect the business development of Mumbai, and even to the India. The situation is not good because of the global finalcial crisis. We think that as the most important developing countries in the world, China and India will do some contribution to relieve the bad situation. This two emerging power are not affected as bad as the weasten countris as they have their own financial system and ecnomic.

But the terror changed the situation. Lot of investment chance will disappear. And lots of business man will leave India as soon as possible. If the personnel safety can not be assured, then there is no business. We know that this will past after several days, but the fear will not moved with it.

What a pity!

Shanghai-Beijing high-speed trains on track for next month

Published by admin under China news

A Beijing-Shanghai high-speed night train is expected to debut next month, reducing travel time by more than 2 hours, a local newspaper reported today.

The Youth Daily report said railway authorities haven’t decided ticket prices or departure times yet for the approximate 9h15m trip. However, tickets are likely to be more than 500 yuan (US$73) considering the price of existing trains.

The highest current price for sleeper tickets between the two cities is 499 yuan.

One train will likely depart about 9:45 pm in each city and arrive at their destinations at about 7am the next day, according to the report. The shortest travel time for other trains between the two cities is 11.5 hours.

The trains are likely to be attractive to business passengers as they are comfortable and cheaper than flights, the report said.

weather in Beijing is getting cold

Published by Turner under Beijing Today

The weather is getting very cold. That is what i feel after i came back from India. Especialy on Nov 19th, when i reached Beijing, It is so cold.

The low temperature is 0 degrees today, and the high temperature is 11 degrees. I think it is even more cold in the eraly moning. Maybe sometimes the lowest tempeature can reach minus 3 degrees or something like that. So if you come to Beijing in the recent days. You would better prepare some warm clothes.

Personally, i like the winter season very much. Sometimes we should feel the cold weather as it is part of the nature and also part of our life.

Beijing not to restrict private car purchase

Published by admin under Beijing Today

Beijing will not restrict the purchase of private cars, as was purposed by residents, to help ease traffic jams and stem pollution, a senior official said on Wednesday.

City authorities will not limit the number of license plates issued to reduce car purchases, said Wang Haiping, deputy head of the Beijing Municipal Commission of Development and Reform at a press conference.

He said it would be an irresponsible move while China is trying to boost domestic consumption to offset impacts from the global financial crisis.

Instead, city authorities would rely on boosting construction of the urban mass transit system and other forms of public transport to solve Beijing’s traffic issues, he said.
