Looming between neon pillars along Zhongguancun Beidajie is the monolithic 180°, the newest and biggest club in Haidian. 180°’s biggest asset is space and even with several hundred clubrats dancing to the standard mix of hip hop/techno it doesn’t feel too crowded. The 5:19 Bar & Grill
Despite its incongruous location on “Super Bar Street,” the new 5:19 Bar & Grill still feels like a neighborhood pub. The decor is comfortable in a Wayne’s World (”It’s party time! It’s excellent!”) kinda way, especially on the second floor, where patrons are encouraged to recline and relax on sofas and bask in the soft candlelight. The dinner menu features an impressive array of salads and entrees. True to the bar’s name, happy hour starts on the dot each day at 5:19pm. Mon-Fri 4pm-late; Sat-Sun 11am-late. 28 Xingba Lu, Nuren Jie (next to PiliPili), Chaoyang District.

Ball House
This difficult-to-find establishment bills itself as a pool hall, but only three pool tables and a haughty air keep things from getting rowdy. The high ceilings and artfully designed lofts, like the clientele, are attractive. Ball House is located in a residential area – so don’t expect to stay up late and holler. Daily 2pm-late. In a small alley directly east of Zhonglou, behind and to the left of the Hosanna Cafe, Dongcheng District.

Beer Mania
Spacious it ain’t, but Beer Mania has got everything it needs to play the role of Belgian beer purveyor par excellence. Namely a great, glistening refrigerator packed with every type of Belgian beer we’d ever heard of, and twice more of those we haven’t. The ambience, despite the bar’s small size, is pleasantly reminiscent of bars in the West: simple, solid furniture, wood-paneled walls and an air of relaxed efficiency. Daily 9am-late. Nan Sanlitun Lu (1/F, Taiyue Fang), Chaoyang District.

Black Ant Bar
Once a bar/outdoor equipment store, the Black Ant is now just a bar. Not to be confused with the original Black Sun Bar 1, which continues to do good business in the now largely chai’d south street of Sanlitun, the original owner has moved his sunshine to this location, featuring bargain-basement drinks, pool tables, darts, foosball, the original caipirinha recipe and a patio. Daily 6.30pm-2am. West gate of Chaoyang Park, Chaoyang District.
Blue Fox
Blue Fox seems to be at a cross between Bar Blu and Hooters. Browns
Set back from Nansanlitun Lu, upstairs from The Loft, an alcoholic revolution is brewing. Maybe it’s the towering shelves of spirits behind the bar, or the floor-to-ceiling wine tower. Perhaps it’s the 500 different shooters available, which are sure to overwhelm even the most experienced of drinkers. Or maybe it’s just the rugby-mad boss Philip Cheung, who explains that Browns is here to give Beijing an education in alcohol. Winner of “Best New Bar” and “Best Bar/Club of the Year” in the 2006 Bar and Club Awards. Mon, Tue, Thu, Sun 11am-2am. Wed, Fri, Sat 11am-4am. The Den
The ground floor bar area is fitted with “den-of-iniquity” type chairs, tables and wall hangings, while upstairs a dark and sweaty dance floor dominates. DJs play a mix of r&b and pop for an enthusiastic, hormonally charged crowd. Happy hour 5-10pm every day with 1/2 price pizza and drinks. On weekends, you can even stick around until dawn for brunch. Editor’s Pick for “Best After-Hours Club” in our 2006 Reader Bar and Club Awards. Daily 24 hours. 4 Gongti Donglu (next to City Hotel’s main entrance), Chaoyang District.
Destination
Spare concrete walls and de rigueur plush sofas don’t immediately explain this club’s popularity, but the almost exclusively y-chromosome-possessing crowd does. Absolutely packed on the weekends, the owners are clearly doing something right. Editor’s Pick for “Best Dance Club” in our 2006 Bar and Club Awards. Daily 6pm-late. 7 Gongti Xilu, Chaoyang District.

East Shore Live Jazz Cafe
Opened by legendary jazzman Liu Yuan – ex-manager of CD Jazz Cafe, the stylish interior of East Shore is hidden behind a non-descript exterior. Featuring live jazz from Thursday to Sunday, go there for the music, the vibe and the panoramic views of Qianhai. Drinks are priced as elsewhere in Houhai. Editor’s Pick for “Best Decor” in our 2006 Reader Bar and Club Awards. Daily 11am-late. 2/F, 2 Qianhai Nanyanlu (just to the west of the post office on Dianmen Waidajie), Xicheng District. Frank’s Place
This legend of the Beijing nightlife scene has risen from the dead and relocated itself to Trio. The bar area is breezy with a subtle sports-theme but the terrace is the place to be during the summer months. Editor’s Pick for “Best Sports Bar” in our 2006 Reader Bar and Club Awards. Daily 10am-2am. Jiangtai Xilu, west of Rosedale Hotel, Lido area, Chaoyang District.
Girl and Beer
Korean Hooters might be a more appropriate name for this latest addition to Wudaokou’s nightlife. The tacky outfits are a turn-off but it does offer tasty bar food and a spacious, laid-back setting. Daily 6pm-3am. 3 Zhongguancun Donglu (400 meters south of Tsinghua East gate, just past the Intelli Fitness center), Wudaokou, Haidian District.
Gogo
An unremarkable courtyard from the outside, the interior of Gogo is encased in glass and transparent from end to end. This little architectural trick sets the place off nicely, showcasing the fishpond, rock garden and dark wooden furniture. Emphasizing wines, fusion foods and exotic cocktails, Gogo is definitely a change for the neighborhood. Daily 5pm-midnight. 13 Beixianglu (100m from Changqiao), Xicheng District.

Bringing a touch of class to a street otherwise ruled by Carlsberg girls, Goldfish boasts three floors decked out in a decadent 1920s style similar to that of Suzie Wong’s. The third floor-cum-roof terrace elevates you above the Houhai bustle and provides a great view of the lake. Beers start from RMB 35. Daily 12pm-late. 5 Lotus Lane, Houhai, Dongcheng District. Guangfuguan Greenhouse
You might think that a bar opened in an ancient Daoist temple is a little sacrilegious, but you’ll probably change your mind after a few beers. To its credit the bar is not flashy, and something of the venue’s original tranquility still remains. Daily 5pm-late. 37 Yandai Xiejie, Xicheng District.

Herrenhauser
One of the more plush lakeside offerings in the Houhai area, consider this bar a relaxed and up-market retreat for quiet chat and drifting laughter. Affiliated with the 974 Car Club, this spot also serves as a meeting place for motorsport enthusiasts, although the decor doesn’t reflect any automotive theme. Daily 11am-late. 22 Deshengmennei Dajie, Houhai West Bank, Xicheng District.
Hiding Place
Visual and conceptual austerity is the guiding principle behind Hiding Place. It’s all one color and there’s not so much as a picture on the wall. This is not a place to get drunk and holler, but it is an excellent spot for quiet conversation. Daily 6pm-2am. 27 Liangmaqiao Lu, Chaoyang District.

Hima
Just a hair more authentic than the average hotel bar, and at least avoids the deadly hotel-lobby location. Come in through the side, sit under the broad windows, and sample a wide menu including both food (steak and pasta) and drink (cocktails and a handful of martini varieties). Hima’s a fine place for a business meeting, and if they were to get a little jazz quartet out on the stage, it might have some atmosphere. Daily 9.30am-late. 1/F, City Hotel, 4 Gongti Donglu, Chaoyang District.
Home
The atmosphere of the bar is not what you would expect from its name. Home follows the chic traditional furnishing style of what you would find in Suzie Wong’s, and Latin dance music. To be fair, the music before 10pm is much more “reserved.” But later in the night it becomes clear: this is a great place to take a date without having to worry about making conversation. Daily 6pm-late. Across from 21st Century Hotel (west of Chaoyang Drive-in Movie Theater), 33 Liangmaqiao Lu, Chaoyang District.
Hope Bar
Tropical plants, large rattan chairs and a standard-issue chill out soundtrack make you feel like you’ve landed in Ibiza or French Colonial Vietnam, with the exception of the decidedly affordable drinks. Daily 2pm-2am. 20 Houhai Nan (50m west of Yinding bridge), Xicheng District.
Hosanna Cafe
Subtle Christian themes pervade this cafe/bar, with a calligraphy translation of Bible verses covering one wall, and framed excerpts hung around the door. The owner intends Hosanna to be a meeting place for Christians, but the restrained piety means that patrons of all faiths will feel welcome in this exceedingly comfortable cafe. Daily 10am-late. South of 40, Zhonglouwan Hutong (directly east of the Bell Tower, look for the yellow sign), Dongcheng District.
Houhai Zoo
Perched on the east shore of Houhai and with a relatively stylish design, the prices (RMB 10 for almost everything: beer, shooters, mixers) are about the only thing this venue has in common with its sister bars Nanjie and Huxley’s. Daily 10am-3am. Bldg 2, Qianhai (next to East Shore Live Jazz), Xicheng District.

Huxley’s
Shut Up and Drink: not much more has to be said really. Cheap drinks in a comfortable atmosphere. Go make friends with Huxley. Daily 6pm-late. Yandai Xiejie (the street running diagonally between the Drum Tower and Yinding Bridge), Xicheng District.
Ibiza Club
Ibiza’s brash, glittering chandeliers and flashing lights dominate the exterior, while abstract geometrical shapes constitute much of the club’s interior. The huge TV screens that display artistic images are soon moved to reveal scantily clad dancers who effortlessly wiggle in time to the pulsating house music. A number of booths and alcoves surround the dance floor, providing a spot for patrons to chill out and catch up on conversation that is otherwise lost to the booming trance. A variety of drinks and Japanese style snacks are available. Daily 8pm-4am. 22 Hepingli Dongdajie, Dongcheng District.
Icehouse
Formerly the Qing dynasty imperial icehouse, the club is a 400sqm space bedecked with mellow hues and a fully loaded bar in the back. The centerpiece is a sizeable stage that the management hopes will play host to a parade of top-bill international blues and jazz acts, as well as a string of heavy hitting house bands. Daily 5.30pm-2am. Xipei Lou, 53 Dong’anmen Dajie, Dongcheng District.

The place to go if you need a good salsa. Daily 9pm-late. A12 Historical Complex, Nanxincang, Dongsi Shitiao, Dongcheng District. (6409 6997)
Lava Lounge
What used to be an offshoot of Club Orange is now all that’s left of the place. It’s got the color scheme of its predecessor, but has opted for a more mock-traditional atmosphere, complete with giant red pillars. It’s out of the way (perhaps fatally so), but decent drink specials await those who make the trek. Daily 11-2am. Dong’erhuan Lu (East Second Ring Road), 500m west of Guangming Qiao, on the south side of the street, first floor of Baigong Fang, Chongwen District.

L’Etage Bar
Not so much a new bar as the product of a face-lifted Relais de Bière. The management has decided tanned wood and foreign beers are not enough to pull in the Sanlitun punters. Instead, they’ve turned the lights down and the music up, and gone for a little trendy French sprucing. Daily 4pm-2am. 2/F, Tongli Building, Sanlitun Houjie (upstairs from Le Bistrot Parisien), Chaoyang District.

Logos
Opened by rock singer Zheng Jun, Logos looks like a rock star’s dream. Perched on the edge of the lake, the setting is beautiful, though the interior is a little extravagant. Chairs are designed in whimsical shapes, and the VIP room is floored in sheepskin. They say it feels better that way … Daily 2pm-2am. Behind Oriental Qicai World, facing Nurenjie, Chaoyang District.

Lotus Lane
The Lotus Lane strip (and it can only be described as a strip) is home to a row of bars of comparable luxury. Though anyone used to Houhai’s other spots will find these bars excessive and then some, they definitely fill a certain niche. 51 Di’anmen Dajie (Shichahai, Qianhai Xiyan), Dongcheng District.

Maggie’s
Maggie’s, that Beijing institution, is one of the oldest bars in the city. Its new location is notably more upscale with a club-like atmosphere. Mystique
Big, loud and shiny – Mystique is the epitome of the Chinese club. Industrial video screens swathe the walls and ceiling with tripped-out color visuals. Tables and booths cover most of the floor space, while the patrons neglect their half-finished RMB 880 bottles of 18 year old Chivas to rattle dice. A hydraulic platform behind the DJ stage occasionally emerges to present skimpily dressed podium dancers who wiggle in time to the mainstream house. Daily 8pm-late. Bldg 3, 15 Sanlitun Bei (just north of Kai), Chaoyang District.
Nameless Highland
Another great spot to hear local music (check Live Music Events for bands). The decor screams “veterans of grizzly wars,” and their attitude towards promoting local music is the same: punks and metal heads grace the stage nightly, with ethnic music interludes. Daily 7pm-2am. The burnt sienna-toned barroom provides the simple pleasures sought by bar-goers the world over: burritos, beer, tequila, chips and salsa. Basic in mission and modest in size, the freshness of their home-made tortillas and spicy salsa indicates an attention to detail missing from many a Sanlitun dive and bespeaks the foreign management’s understanding of where to cut corners and where not to. Owners often show American football matches (as long as it’s a team they favor). Daily 4pm-2am. Opposite Tongli Studio, Sanlitun Beilu, Chaoyang District.

Nothing really sets it apart from the other holes along the main stretch of Sanlitun, apart from a half-decent band and plenty of punters. Xenia
We are not sure if the proprietors of Xenia were aware that this word literally translates from ancient Greek intohospitality, but one thing is for sure: there is enough mock gold adorning the venue’s exterior to impress any Mycenaean king. Upon entering, the mood soon changes from Hellenistic to hardcore as the trance music blares across the dimly lit dance floor. Yuan Dynasty Bar Street
A ready made bar street in the style of Houhai’s Lotus Lane, the Yuan Dynasty Bar Street is heavily invested, heavily designed, and more or less devoid of soul. Crowded along the north bank of the Tucheng river/sewage outflow is a series of bars with names like Liky, Nest and Climax, adorned with lights and kitsch. The south bank provides a nicely manicured walk past willows and stone balustrades, but as for the north – you have been warned.
